Why is Strength Training So Important?
Starting as early as our 40s, our bodies begin to gradually lose muscle mass at a slow but consistent rate. By the time we reach our 80s, we may involuntarily lose up to 50% of our skeletal muscle. This primarily occurs due to age-related decline but is accelerated by an inactive lifestyle.
Skeletal muscle is crucial in supporting many essential physiological functions. Losing this muscle can have serious effects on our strength, agility, balance, and overall bodily functions, significantly affecting our quality of life.
Sarcopenia, the age-related involuntary loss of muscle, has been linked to:
-
Increased risk of falls
-
Cognitive decline
-
Higher insulin resistance
-
Fatigue
-
Greater likelihood of chronic conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis

Research shows that the muscle loss associated with aging can be slowed down and even reversed through consistent strength training, allowing you to do the things you love for longer!
Mastering Everyday Movements for Strength and Independence
Squatting, hinging, pushing, pulling, and carrying are fundamental movement patterns that we all use every day. Training these patterns with added resistance and proper form is cruical to prevent injury and maintain independence as we age.
By incorporating exercises that target these fundamental patterns into your strength routine, you can improve your quality of life, reduce the risk of injury, and stay active and confident in your abilities for years to come.
We would love to help you to safely progress these exercises in our “Strong Seniors” program. Call the clinic to secure your spot!
