Dr. Michael Maxwell,

Dr Maxwell has a special interest and knowledge in the diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of sports and athletic injuries, and movement-based care for optimal health and performance.

 

Dr Maxwell is not your average Chiropractor. He is passionately involved in the post-graduate continuing education of Chiropractors and Physiotherapists through his continuing education company SomaticSenses.com, through which he has hosted well over 300 continuing education courses since 2002. Through his consistent and exceptional exposure to some of the world's most recognized clinicians and educators, Dr. Maxwell has become a leader in the continuing education of Chiropractors and rehabilitation practitioners alike.

In 2017, Dr. Maxwell became Canada's only Certified International Instructor for Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilization (DNS). DNS is a system of rehabilitation based on the developing human movement system. DNS Education is sought by Physiotherapists, Chiropractors and allied rehabilitation professionals around the globe.

More recently,  Dr. Maxwell became Canada's only Certified International Instructor for the renowned Physiotherapist Michael Shacklock and his system Neurodynamic Solutions. Mr. Shacklock is a pioneer and world-leading expert on the evaluation and management of injuries that impact nerves, i.e. lumbar disc herniation and sciatica and carpal tunnel syndrome.

 

Dr. Maxwell also offers online and live education on shoulder injuries and rehabilitation.

Dr. Michael Maxwell holds an Honours Bachelor of Human Kinetics - Exercise Science degree from the University of British Columbia and graduated Suma Cum Laude from Western States Chiropractic College. Dr. Maxwell is a member of the British Columbia Chiropractic Association and the BC College of Chiropractors. He was a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist from 2002-2012 and has been a rehabilitation and performance consultant since 1997. Dr. Maxwell was Chiropractic Consultant for Bobsleigh Canada Skeleton from 2007-2009, World Champion Ironman (age 30-34) Tommy Nielson and Ironman Champion Heather Wurtele, and Strength and Conditioning Coach for the Camosun Men's Volleyball team in 2003-2004. Dr Maxwell currently works with a variety of patients including recreational and elite athletes and the non-athlete looking for short and long-term strategies for pain resolution and improved function. 

 

Dr. Maxwell's treatment approach includes a variety of treatment "tools" including:

  • Soft tissue therapies such as Active Release Technique, Functional Range Release, Myofascial Release and Deep Tissue Massage

  • Joint manipulation and graded mobilizations. He is a certified practitioner in Mulligan Mobilizations with Movement.

  • Exercise rehabilitation and corrective exercise: Dr. Maxwell has an extensive background in strength and conditioning and medical exercise.

  • He is NCCP Level 1 Weightlifting certified and spent 10 years in the trenches as a strength and conditioning coach, Medical Exercise Specialist, and Kinesiologist.
